GRI publish Greenstone’s Event Footprint report

greenstone_footprint_partner_stamp_RGB_SMALL.pngThe Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) recently published the event footprint of its 5th GRI Global Conference held in May. Earlier this year, Greenstone was selected as the Event Footprint Partner for the event and collected data before, during and after the event to calculate an accurate footprint.

Using its Enterprise software solution, Greenstone calculated the carbon footprint of the 3-day conference held at the RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre in Amsterdam.  To measure the environmental impacts of the conference, the carbon footprint includes carbon emissions associated with the use of the venue, attendees travelling to and from the event and the logistics involved. This includes:

  • Use of energy, water, waste and food waste at the conference centre
  • Attendee travel to and from the event
  • Hotel stays
  • Freight / Courier services
  • Supplier / Exhibitor logistics
  • Printing of materials

Total emissions

The total absolute emissions associated with the aspects of the conference measured were 542.05 tCO₂e. With 1,117 delegates attending over the 3-day event, average emissions were 0.49 tCO₂e per delegate.

Significant reductions

GRI ran a comparison against the emissions of GRI’s 2013 Conference held at the same venue.

The reductions (which include offset attendee travel) were:

  • A 55.4% reduction in total absolute emissions
  • A 37.1% reduction in average emissions per delegate

More information

Greenstone has carried out similar footprints for events and conferences including the Ryder Cup Gold Tournament, the EAUC Conference and most recently the Business & Climate Summit in London.   To find out more about Greenstone’s event carbon footprinting services, please contact us.
