Who's the client?

Formed in 1991, Enterprise Inns is one of the UK’s leading specialist operators of leased and tenanted pubs, with over 6,820 pubs in its estate.

What's the story?

Greenstone worked with Enterprise Inns to implement a web-based service which enabled pub retailers to accurately measure energy consumption, one of the largest operating costs, at an average cost of £16,000 per annum.  This project helped Enterprise Inns’ retailers gain a better understanding of their energy usage and spend, and how they can reduce it.

The service provided tailored advice to pub retailers to enable them to develop their own energy management plans and achieve cost savings. Once rolled out across the entire Enterprise Inns estate in England and Wales, this programme could deliver annual cost savings to their retailers of more than £11m per year and cut the UK hospitality sector’s carbon footprint by almost 1%.

The Ryder cup is one of the Top Ten Global Sports Events and is the largest event that Wales has ever hosted.

One of the aims of Ryder Cup 2010 is to showcase responsible environmental management in golf. An important component of achieving this aim is to minimise the emission of greenhouse gases arising from the event.

What's the story?

Greenstone was commissioned by the Ryder Cup to assist in the development and implementation of a carbon management programme.

Greenstone used data from previous Ryder Cup and other golfing events to estimate a business as usual carbon footprint for the Ryder Cup 2010. A reduction strategy was created, targeted at the aspects of the event with the greatest potential for emission reduction. Real data was gathered during the event preparation and the event itself, which was used to create an actual carbon footprint for the event. This would become the benchmark of the carbon impact of golfing events, based on a methodology that will be replicable at future events.

Fenner Plc is a world leader in reinforced polymer technology.

What's the story?

To understand its risks and impacts across the Group’s global operations, Fenner implemented Greenstone to calculate, manage and report its environmental impact. Through the implementation of Greenstone’s Environment module, Fenner now has a transparent, robust and audit-ready process for managing its utility consumption, business travel and carbon emissions.

Following a successful UK pilot, Fenner has implemented a global roll-out of Greenstone to all of its operations, with active users in 80 locations across 16 countries. In addition, Fenner has rolled out Greenstone’s Health & Safety module, providing the Group with an online process for recording key H&S metrics at each site and enabling aggregated analysis and reporting.

Fenner Group HSE Coordinator, Paul Sexton, said; “Greenstone's solution makes the whole process of measuring and tracking our emissions quicker, easier and more cost-effective. We are able to track and analyse our carbon emissions across all geographies, sites and business units within the Group and meet both our internal monitoring and external reporting requirements.  Using the same system to consolidate our H&S data is also a win for the business; saving our staff time and ensuring that we can easily access accurate and timely data in a single solution.”

Who's the client?

G4S is a world leading security solutions group, with over 625,000 employees delivering services to governments and private sector clients in more than 120 countries including operations in Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific, Africa, Latin America and North America.

What's the story?

G4S has implemented Greenstone’s software to monitor their carbon emissions across multi-country regulatory requirements.

G4S required an easy-to-use platform to delegate data collection to country and operating unit levels across the business.  The data collection process is simplified as environmental coordinators around the world are able to upload data in a consistent format to one centralised place.

Greenstone’s software then automatically calculates carbon emissions at multiple organisational and business unit levels using both the GHG Protocol and, where relevant, national calculation methodologies.  Due to the global scale of their operations, G4S need to be prepared for localised compliance regulations as they come into force.  By working with Greenstone they can keep abreast of regulatory developments and minimise potential compliance risks.

All of this means G4S can apply greater focus on identifying targeted carbon reduction initiatives and local country teams are able to set their own reduction targets and monitor performance on an ongoing basis.

HRG Rennies provides a corporate travel and event management service with operations in 120 countries across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

What's the story?

HRG Rennies has teamed up with Greenstone and, specialist climate change consultancy in South Africa, Cleaner Climate to provide their clients with Travel Carbon Emission Reports.  The reports are generated using Greenstone’s enterprise solution.

The easy to read reports provide a clear and concise breakdown of the companies’ travel emissions and help to identify areas where travel could be reduced to save carbon emissions and cost.  The process also supplements voluntary Scope 3 emissions disclosure.

Kerry Wright, Director at Cleaner Climate, commented, “We have seen a growing demand from organisations in South Africa for a tool that will help them measure and report carbon emissions in an accurate and transparent way.  The popularity of HRG Rennies Travel’s carbon emissions travel report is just one example of how organisations across South Africa are taking carbon emissions measurement seriously.  Voluntary reporting, such as the Carbon Disclosure Project, as well as regulatory drivers, such as the new King III compliance guidelines and impending climate change legislation, which will include carbon tax and mandatory emission reporting, have increased the need for accurate carbon reporting.  Greenstone’s solution has proven to be the most user friendly and accessible tool on the market.”

 Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital

Who's the client?

In support of the NHS’s carbon reduction strategy and the targets laid out in the Climate Change Act, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals (SWBH) NHS Trusthas developed a Carbon Management Plan (CMP). The CMP focuses on measuring, monitoring and reducing the Trust’s carbon emissions 15% by 2016/17, alongside engaging with staff and stakeholders.

What's the story?

To assist with meeting these reduction targets and other reporting requirements, SWBH NHS Trust has implemented Greenstone’s software. The use of Greenstone significantly reduces the burden of data gathering across multiple hospital sites, enabling the Trust to focus on analysing the data and identifying carbon reduction opportunities.

Through the use of Greenstone, SWBH NHS Trust can now upload resource consumption data each month and calculate carbon emissions against a continually updated database of internationally recognised methodologies and emission factors. This has led to the solution becoming the central solution to manage data across all 3 hospitals in the Trust, relieving the administrative burden and enabling the team to focus on analysing results, meeting multiple reporting requirements and achieving reduction targets.

Greenstone has provided the SWBH NHS Trust with a consistency in its approach to calculating emissions. In addition, carefully defining the structure of the Trust within the solution and determining the availability and quality of each data set, has created the robust results required in order to help meet the NHS carbon reduction targets.

This solution can be rolled-out to any NHS Trust or related institution to improve efficiency in data collection, carbon measurement and reporting. It can be relied upon to produce immediate and meaningful results and can lead to an increased level of understanding and engagement in the overall NHS carbon reduction strategy.

ZBD’s

Who's the client?

ZBD’s electronic point of purchase (EPOP) device is an electronic price and information display designed as a replacement for paper labels. Its primary target market is in environments where retailers can gain sales and reduce waste by amending prices frequently, such as delicatessen counters and on other perishable items, or where prices and promotions need regular change to reflect a competitive market or consumer buying trends.

What's the story?

Greenstone was commissioned by ZBD to undertake an assessment of the life cycle carbon footprint of the EPOP and to compare the product, over its average 5 year life span, against the carbon footprint of traditional paper tag pricing methods.  Since full life cycle carbon footprint analysis is a relatively new field, the footprint analysis required a combination of real-data where available, benchmarks for embodied energy of raw materials from Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) databases, and assumptions based upon literature research for more complicated components and disposal scenarios.

The results were used to help retailers assess the carbon savings they could achieve within their own operations by adopting ZBD’s smart electronic labelling solution.
